Posted - 03/05/2007 : 12:46:25 Ivory's season has not been as *dynamic* as it was last year. Ofcourse with all players some seasons are better than others but here is some info on Ivory that I think is worth sharing with the WESH community:
1. She hurt her knee in the game they lost to Maryland last year in the final four. I don't know the exact medical term but I think it's the same injury Terence Roberts of Syracuse is playing with now. Well, she needed surgery in the offseason and therefore couldn't go through her usual thousand jumpshot (or something like that) a day routine. She really didn't start playing until just before the season and for much of the early season she looked slower than usual and not quite in game shape.
2. The Women's NCAA rules and regulations tape that went out to all the officials this summer, stressing new priorities for the women's game (you know, like they always say they are going to crack down on palming or hand-checking in the men's game) featured a segment on Ivory Latta where the subject was cracking-down on emotional and enthusiastic displays on the court. Many of the women's NCAA analysts for ESPN have discussed how Ivory's on-the-court personality has not been nearly as effusive this year, and that is how she gets both herself and her teammates pumped up. They were saying yesterday that before the game the REFs were talking to Ivory and then they gave her several warnings to "settle down" during the first half. Like, what kinda shit is that?!? It's almost as bad as the anti-Alcindor rule (when during Kareem's days at UCLA they made up a rule that said you couldn't dunk). Anyway, if you watched carefully yesterday you saw that right after Ivory made that nice move and hit the game winning lay-up, she ran up court making a "Ohhh shit, did you see that" kinda face but then in the middle of doing it she quickly shot a glance over at the refs. It's tough for a girl like Ivory. For as much of a show-woman as she is, she is also a very polite smalltown southern girl. Everyone says whenever you talk to her it is always "yes sir" and "yes mam". She wants to do the right thing. She just can't help it.
As much as all this has an impact, I just don't see Carolina running as much this year as they did last year. It's gonna be fascinating to see what they do next year with Ivory gone. Alex Miller's greatest strength is her speed (she's like a waterspider out there). If she's not running, she's not really of much use to a Top 5 program.

Posted - 04/02/2006 : 20:27:15 Damn I didn't see those articles until right now. And double damn. I'm not going to be able to compete with Lebron James for just about anything. Except freedom, perhaps. Like, I could quit my job and sleep on her couch for a few months, and it wouldn't really impact my quality of life that much. Lebron can't do that. He also can't take half a year off to ride his bike across the country or maybe just fly to Italy to get some pizza (actually, he could do the pizza). He probably isn't as good of a guitar player (although perhaps there's something I don't know about him). Also, not only do I have a BA, I also have a Master's degree--so I'm ready to help you with your homework Ivory!

Little Latta has big fan in LeBron
LeBron James met Ivory Latta only briefly, but the little point guard made a big impression.
Three years ago, as high school seniors, the two competed in the McDonald's All-American Games at what was then Gund Arena. James, of course, became an NBA star with the Cavaliers, while Latta is a star with the No. 1 ranked North Carolina Tar Heels, who will face Purdue in the Cleveland Regional semifinals of the NCAA women's basketball tournament Sunday afternoon at The Q.
"Right from the start, we had a good bond," James said of Latta. "She's outgoing and funny and loves basketball, just like me. I saw great talent in her. I'm happy for what she's doing for the lady Tar Heels. I wish her a lot of success, and I hope I'll be able to watch her play Tuesday when we come back from Houston.
"What she's doing for that team is awesome."

Posted - 03/29/2006 : 06:44:40 Looks like billy bananas 2nd alias has some competition:
CLEVELAND (AP) - Ivory Latta flexed her muscles at LeBron James, shook hands with Pat Summitt and helped North Carolina drop mighty Tennessee out of the NCAA tournament.
She's fearless. She's fast. She's feisty.
And, she is Final Four-bound.
The littlest Tar Heel, making every big play down the stretch, put top-seeded North Carolina in its first Final Four since winning the 1994 national championship with a 75-63 win over Tennessee in the Cleveland Regional on Tuesday night.
After complaining that their road to Boston was way too tough, the Tar Heels are packing their bags for another road trip.
"We're the No. 1 team in the nation," said Latta, "and tonight we showed it."
The 5-foot-6 (with heels on, maybe) Latta finished with 20 points, nine assists and four steals in 40 minutes for the Tar Heels (33-1), who will play Maryland in this weekend's Final Four.
The Terrapins were the only team to beat North Carolina, edging the Tar Heels by three points in overtime on Feb. 9.
Latta scored nine of her team's final 11 points, drilling a crucial 3-pointer with 3:27 left and picking up the assist on the other basket as North Carolina finally put away the Lady Vols (31-5).
With the Tar Heels up 64-58 and the 30-second shot clock winding down, Latta stepped back and drilled her 3-pointer from the top of the key.
"Coach told me to get the ball and back it out," Latta said. "They were just standing there. It was a dagger. I'm just glad I made it."
On North Carolina's next trip, Latta drove the lane and threaded a pass lane to Erlana Larkins for a layup to make it 69-60. After freshman Candace Parker's basket, Latta then made six straight free throws in the final 56.1 seconds and the Tar Heels improved to just 2-12 all-time against Tennessee, which was seeking its 17th trip to the Final Four.
Following the game, Latta introduced herself to Tennessee Coach Pat Summitt.
"Hey, Ivory," Summitt told the ACC's player of the year. "You did a great job."
Moments later, Latta was still reeling from their encounter.
"I just shook her hand and I'm still shaking," she said. "That was pretty cool."
With the ball in her hands counting down the final seconds, Latta slapped hands with Atkinson, screamed "Yeah" and pointed toward James, the Cavaliers' superstar who was sitting in a luxury suite. The two first met at high school All-Star game in Cleveland a few years back.
"We flexed at each other," Latta said. "I have the bigger arms. I was so glad he was here."

Posted - 03/27/2006 : 07:51:32 North Carolina Advances To Elite Eight With 70-68 Win Over Purdue Ivory Latta hit the winning shot with 2.8 seconds left.
March 26, 2006
CLEVELAND (AP) - North Carolina's Ivory Latta made the winning shot and then was carried from the floor - by the team's trainers.
The tough and tiny point guard hit a driving layup with 2.8 seconds left before her leg cramped up as the top-seeded Tar Heels advanced in the NCAA tournament with a 70-68 win Sunday over Purdue in the semifinals of the Cleveland Regional.
After banking in the go-ahead basket to snap a 68-68 tie, Latta fell to the floor in pain and watched as Purdue's Katie Gearlds missed a half-court heave as time expired. The Tar Heels (32-1) rushed to Latta, who by then was grabbing her left knee and screaming in agony.
As her teammates flocked around her, the arena went from wild cheers to stunned silence.
Latta said her calf muscle cramped as she went up for the layup, but she will not miss the Tar Heels' matchup with the second-seeded Lady Vols, who beat Rutgers 76-69 in the other semifinal.
If not for her dramatic basket, North Carolina would be on its way home.
"I'm a tough little cookie," Latta said with a smile. "It's going to take a lot to knock me out of a game."
Well, that's about as bad as I have seen Carolina play this year -- 1 for 11 from three point range
And that is about as bad as I have seen Ivory Latta shoot -- 0 for 4 from three point range (but she was 9 for 10 from the line)
I guess sometimes you gotta win ugly:

But Ivory hit the game winner:

. . . and they're moving on:

Hatchell, Latta Named Naismith Finalists Tar Heel coach and player are among top four for awards.
March 23, 2006
ATLANTA -- North Carolina women's basketball coach Sylvia Hatchell and junior guard Ivory Latta have been named as finalists for prestigious Naismith honors.
Hatchell is among four finalists for the Naismith Award, which goes to the national coach of the year. Also on the list are LSU's Pokey Chatman, Ohio State's Jim Foster and Maryland's Brenda Frese.
Latta is one of four finalists for the Naismith Trophy, which goes to the national player of the year. She is joined on the final ballot by LSU's Seimone Augustus, Oklahoma's Courtney Paris and Rutgers' Cappie Pondexter. Winners of both awards will be recognized at the Naismith Awards Banquet on April 7 in Atlanta.
The finalists were chosen through a vote by the Atlanta Tipoff Club's Board of Selectors, who narrowed the mid-season lists of 20 coaching candidates and 30 player candidates down to the final four in each category. The Board, which is comprised of leading basketball journalists, coaches and administrators from around the country, based its criteria on player performance this season.
Fans can help select the winner of the player of the year honor, with fan voting accounting for 25 percent of the selection process. To vote, fans can text message "VOTE" to "87654" to receive the final ballot and participate in the voting process. Voting for the Naismith Trophy Women's College Basketball Player of the Year award will end on Saturday, April 1 at 9 p.m. ET.

But you're right. I'm easily smitten and her cute face has gotten me into a 30 minute mid-workday daydream. I'll watch her play on Sunday morning (11:30am san fran time). I hope to not be too hung over.
The only other NCAA tourney game I've seen (men or women's) this year is UCLA/alabama.
I seriously considered going to UNC because I read an article in the paper about a local girl who was going to play soccer for them and I had a similar daydream about going there to meet her (Tiffany Roberts. She's still kicking ass there too). But yeah I really hate that I'm accepting the fact that I'm now too old to date college girls... |

The montage comes towards the first part of the film, as we're still just getting to know each other, and it's designed to show our growing sexual tension and excitement. As the music plays and the clips flip from one to the next, you see things like us playing basketball together 1-on-1 at the park --I hit a cruddy fadeaway jumper, then she embarrasses me with a crazy crossover drive to the hoop. Next scene I'm trying to teach her how to play guitar. Then it shows her in a real game, and hits a very similar fadeaway jumper to the one at the park--she smirks to the sideline and there I am laughing and clapping. Then I'm helping her with her homework. Then we're on the beach at a bonfire. She looks cold so I put my coat over her shoulders and leave my arm around her. She gives me a quick sideways "whaaat are you doing" look and then kinda pushes in closer to me. That's the fadeout scene. I think it's set in San Francisco over the course of a weekend where she's in town cuz UNC is playing USF and I invited a group of girls I saw near my house to a party I was having. It's one of those films that, although it's supposed to be just a couple days long, they never explain how so much stuff happens and how much apparent time passes by. The tension of the movie comes a bit after this part, when "society" pressures us about our relationship. Well. she's got unlimited range. One of the ACC leaders in three-point and freethrow percentage, plus (despite her size) she has the highest bench press and leg press on the team. So she can shoot deep and she can throw full court passes like lasers. Which help since the two fastest players on the team (Alex Miller and center Erlana Larkins) are both faster than a third player (Jennifer Nelms) who is on the All-American 4x400 relay team. She's got a crossover like A-I and like the announcers said in their last game, "you won't find many women players who can make off balance floaters in the lane like Ivory." So the skills are there. How they'll translate into the WNBA or even against Tennessee that has four starters 6-3 or taller (the Carolina Men don't even have four starters 6-3 or taller) I don't know. I think she'll be fine against Tennessee but eventually her size could catch up with her. Right now she can score in traffic pretty comfortably.
BUT what I love most about her game is her enthusiam and attitude. Although the above picture is clearly after a game, she could just as easily be doing that in a game. She REALLY plays to the crowd (UNC fans). Plus, you can just tell her teammates love playing with her. She is soooo magnetic on the court. She's bringing back the low-five. I've really never seen anything like it. If you had this much talent with this much charm, heart, enthusiasm, what have you, in the mens game -- the marketers would be flippping out!!!

Posted - 03/22/2006 : 18:19:19 We only have four more opportunities (at most) to see Ivory Latta play this year. Let's not miss any of them.
Next Game: Sunday versus Big Ten runner-up Purdue
When I first saw Ivory Latta play high school basketball, she was leading her aau team to the 2002 Junior Olympics Championship. The first thing that entered my mind when she took the floor was her tragically inferior height. Once the ball was tipped, that thought was promptly followed by an observance of her vastly superior offensive game.
Latta stands but 5'4', although the North Carolina Tarheels athletic department web site would like us believe that their freshman point guard is 5'6'. That may be true when the former high school prom queen is wearing high heels yet is only wishful thinking otherwise.
Her height-challenged status led many to believe that she would struggle against the taller girls that she would face in the ACC who offer more competition than the players Latta torched while utterly terrorizing the South Carolina high-school circuit for 4,319 career points in 6 years (she played hs varsity during her 7th and 8th grade years too) . . . . Don't bet on it. My third observance upon seeing her play was her unparalleled heart and determination. She is my nominee for most special frosh this season. -- Lucas White, www.bballx.com (2003)
