Autumn is Here

Every autumn, you feel it coming. Something about the days getting shorter, the nights cooling off, the start of classes and hot apple cider and the smell of the first rains cleaning the air. Nothing encompasses that first realization of summer being over like the sound of brushes on a hi-hat and snare, a standup bass sliding from note to note, and some dude busting out a progression of chords that make your neck tingle with dissonance and then resolve so smooth you let your breath out. Jazz is the soundtrack for Fall.

No one played jazz guitar like Joe Pass. He remains the king, even ten years after his death. Foregoing accompaniment, his piece "Here's That Rainy Day" captures every feeling of late September through late November. The hesitation while considering an end to another summer mixed with the anticipation and excitement of autumn leaves, pumpkin pies and the toasty fires ahead, both combined so seamlessly.

Originally appearing on his 1973 release titled "Virtuoso" and also on the live recording "Blues Dues," recorded in 1984 at Long Beach City College and released in 1998, you can find it on Amazon.com here and here. Click the links for preview snippets, because although the iTunes Store and Napster list a lot of Joe Pass, I haven't been able to find this song on their servers, nor elsewhere. Regardless, don't hesitate to discover his music, and explore some of his contemporaries like Kenny Burrell, and give yourself something nice to carry you into this new season.

Haven't heard "Guitar Interludes", but I do own "My Song" which has Mr.Pass in the more standard setting of guitar bass drums. Wonderful stuff, I'll look out for Interludes now, thanks. And yeah too bad about NYC, would have been a memorable time. I was pretty bummed that I couldn't pull it off. We'll make it happen next time around for certain.

Great post.

Napster has Virtuoso for sale, but not as part of the subscription service. There are like 50 Joe Pass songs on the subscription service, though.
